Welcome to Honors English 11 and Honors English 12/Dual Enrollment 101/102. I look forward to getting to know each of you juniors and getting to know each of you seniors better. With that in mind, here are a few things about me. I have been teaching for 26 years, and I love what I do. (I must, or I wouldn't still be doing it!) I enjoy cooking, music, and reading. My family and my faith are extremely important to me. I am interested in learning what is important to you. Let's spend the next few months getting to know each other better.
Let's talk about some of the other characters now. What do you think about Brother Fowles and Reverend Price? How do they agree and differ in their approach to their calling? Which is more effective? Explain.

Reverand Price for starters is a strong Southern Baptist who is extremely impatient and does not like to admit he is wrong. He thinks he has to save all of Africa and do it all right now. He does not realize what he is doing is wrong and is destroying his family. Then you have Brother Fowles who, unlike Reverand Price, is a Northern Catholic. He is a generous and patient man, the Africans love him unlike Price. They fear Reverand Price and are scared for their lives when it comes to him. Price scares the Africans away from Jesus and Fowles helped the Africans to Jesus.
I agree with Tyler. Reverand Price is a stubbern ritual preacher and does not want to ever adjust his ideals to the congo. Brother fowles is willing to adjust to the congo's ideals and put it in a way the congo people could view with.
I agree. Reverand Price felt a calling to help the people in the Congo, but took his work to an extreme level, forgetting his duty as a father. Horrible events in the end still didn't wake him up and realize he wasn't doing his job as a husband and a father. Brother Fowles was a different preacher, but he understood that man is sinful, and nobody's perfect.
I agree, Reverend Price completely forgot his obligation to his family while trying to save the people of Africa. However, with Brother Fowles being a more patient man, he was able to save the African people and take care of his family at the same time.
Brother Fowles did not let the Congo get the best of him; instead he got the best of the Congo. He earned the trust and respect of the people, therefore they listened to him and his ideas. He also adapted to their beliefs; he did not try to overpower them with his. Reverend Price, on the other hand, did exactly the opposite. He refused to see eye to eye to the Congolese and in the end paid for his mistake.
I also agree with Tyler, Reverend Price was stubborn and destroyed his family with his actions while in Africa. He scared away all the villagers from Jesus especially by constantly trying to baptize all the children in the river after he had been warned about it. Brother Fowles respected some of the villagers beliefs so they in return respected him. Because of that he brought more people to Christianity.
Reverend Price is on a mission, to help the people of Congo. He cares about his family, but as the book progresses we see that he really is not as nice as he is made out to be at the beginning. Like Tyler said, Reverend Price is Southern Baptist and Brother Fowles is a Northern Catholic. That makes a big difference on how they approach the people.
Brother Fowles was more gentler than Nathan Price, who was forceful than he was. This made the Africans not like Nathan Price and kept him from bringing people to Christianity. Brother Fowles was kind to the Africans and was able to bring many more people to christianity.

Reverand Price is not a good man in my opion. He does not treat his family well.
Reverand Price took his family to Africa without really asking them what they thought about it, he just took them.
