Welcome to Honors English 11 and Honors English 12/Dual Enrollment 101/102. I look forward to getting to know each of you juniors and getting to know each of you seniors better. With that in mind, here are a few things about me. I have been teaching for 26 years, and I love what I do. (I must, or I wouldn't still be doing it!) I enjoy cooking, music, and reading. My family and my faith are extremely important to me. I am interested in learning what is important to you. Let's spend the next few months getting to know each other better.
I think that Alex is telling a story about how people mature. At the end of the book, Nick is clearly a different person than he was in the beginning. He is capable of identifying his mistakes and learning from them. Characters like Mario and Leo help him see his wrongdoings.
I believe that Nick had to learn from the situation with Caitlin and that he could be different from his father. I think his first problem was actually realizing he had a problem and once he figured that out, he had to change and become someone different than his father had taught him to be. Most of us live by examples and our mothers and fathers are some of the main people we look to for guidance. I believe Nick knew right from wrong, he just had to meet the right people to get him on a better path to make his life right. I think Mario and Leo were some of the main people who helped him understand that.
I agree. He never truly had anyone in his life at home to tell him otherwise. I think he truly liked Caitlin, and in a sense she became his shelter, like Tom's house was for a while. So when he decided that she was leaving, he reacted the way his dad did when something went wrong. He realized later on that he did not need to have a person or place to be his shelter. It's a really good book.
I agree with Danielle. Nick eventually finds out how immature he was in the beginning of the book. He realizes how much his mistakes affected not only him, but everyone around him.
I agree completely with everybody. This story is telling us the growth of Alex. Alex starts out thinking he is right and is nothing like the men in the group, but he slowly learns they are all exactly alike and he has a lot of growing to do.
I believe that Nick should have told someone about what was going on at home all along, many of the things that had happened to him would have been different if he had.
I agree with Barbara. The choices we make in life effect our future outcomes. If Nick would have told someone about the problems he was having instead of keeping everything in, then his and Caitlin's relationship could have been 100% different.
I agree with what everyone has said. Alex just does not see his mistake like he should. It takes a while before he finally does. Nick is the same way, he does not see anything wrong with how he treats Caitlin. But, once Nick start going to anger managment classes, things change for the better and he realizes what he is doing wrong.
I think that Nick did not really know what he was doing when he beat Caitlin. He has always been abused by his father so that is all that he had known. By the end of the story Nick matures into a person that is able to realized what he has done is wrong.
I believe that in the begining of the book Nick did not understand his wrong doing but as he progressed in his anger management classes he starts to realize and understand he could and should have told someone about his father and by the end of the book he understands his wrong doing and the consequences he suffered through.
Nick and Tom used to be best friends and then after Nick beats Caitlin, they do not really talk anymore. Then at the end of the story after Tom learns about what Nick's father does to him, he feels sorry for Nick and they start back being friends again.
I understand Caitin's reactions to Nicks behavior but I do not think that she would have taken such extreme if her parents would not have been involved. I think that Tom should have tried to talk to Nick after all they went through as kids. I believe even though we are never told that Tom had an understanding that something was going on at home with Nick even though Nick never said.
I completely agree with Lauren and Barbara about him telling someone about his problems. If he had mentioned it to someone else, then maybe he could have gotten help for his relationship with Caitlin before everything went downhill. We have to take responsibilities for out actions.
I think that I would have reacted the same way as Caitlin did, but maybe not as extreme. Instead of totally blocking Nick out of her life, I would have found him help and maybe even be the one friend he did not have after the event happened. That is probably when Nick needed friends the most and he did not eve have one instead of the few ones from his discussion group.
I think that Nick was telling how he changed before and after him and Caitlin broke up. He was telling how he changed for the worse and then later for the better.I think that he also tell how he realized how he was treating her and changed for the better.

Danielle, why do you think Alex has such a hard time "seeing" his mistakes?

I like the athurs way of keeping you into the book, she also has good vocabulary.
